About

Formal semantics is a research methodology within linguistics, philosophy, and logic that applies formal systems, such as logic and model theory, to analyze the mechanisms by which the meaning of linguistic expressions is determined. It investigates how compositional principles combine the meanings of parts to yield the meaning of the whole, often defining meaning in terms of truth conditions, thereby providing a rigorous framework for understanding language structure and interpretation.
